Phase 1

Pre-Procedure Preparation

The journey begins with comprehensive consultations and assessments to understand your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals. This helps us determine whether Axonics Therapy is the right fit for you.

Initial Consultation

Your first appointment involves an in-depth discussion with our experienced team. We review your full medical background and current health status to understand how incontinence affects your daily life. If referred by a provider, such as a primary care physician, urologist, or urogynecologist, we collaborate to ensure continuity of care. If you’re a healthcare provider referring a patient, please complete our referral form to start the process.

Assessment and Planning

After the consultation, we conduct a full evaluation, which may include diagnostic tests to further understand your condition. Based on the results, we create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific symptoms and needs. Throughout this stage, we focus on education and communication, clearly explaining the procedure, expected outcomes, and any risks, so you feel informed and confident moving forward.

Phase 2

Implantation Procedure

Once Axonics Therapy is determined to be a good fit, we move into the implantation phase, which includes a trial period followed by the permanent implant procedure.

The Trial Period

Before committing to the full treatment, you’ll begin with a temporary device that simulates the effects of the implant. Worn externally, this trial device lets you assess how well the therapy reduces your symptoms. During this time, you’ll continue normal activities and track your progress in a symptom log. A positive response during the trial is a strong indicator that Axonics Therapy is appropriate for long-term relief.

Preparing for Surgery

If the trial is successful, we move forward with the permanent implantation. Our team will guide you through pre-operative instructions, such as fasting guidelines and any medication adjustments. In some cases, a preventive antibiotic may be prescribed.

The Implant Procedure

The permanent device is implanted just under the skin in the upper part of the buttock, near the nerve roots in your lower back. The procedure is minimally invasive and typically performed through a small incision. Our surgeons at Northwest Continence Center are specialists in spine-related surgeries, bringing years of training and experience to every procedure. While mild discomfort is normal after the surgery, most patients recover quickly and return to normal activities with little downtime.

Phase 3

Post-Procedure Care

After the procedure, we provide complete follow-up care to ensure a safe recovery and optimal results. This includes personalized support, monitoring, and adjustments to fine-tune your therapy.

Device Monitoring and Adjustments

Once implanted, the device begins sending electrical signals to improve communication between your brain and pelvic muscles. You’ll use a handheld remote to control the stimulation levels and can adjust them as needed with the support of your care team. The device can also be turned down or off if necessary. We provide detailed at-home care instructions and stay in close contact to ensure everything is progressing smoothly.

Follow-Up Appointments

Regular follow-ups are key to tracking your recovery and confirming the device is working properly. We’ll assess your symptom relief, make any needed adjustments, and monitor for side effects or signs of infection. Throughout your recovery, our team remains available to address any questions or concerns, prioritizing your comfort and long-term success.

Regain Freedom and Confidence

The goal of Axonics Therapy is simple: help you regain control and enjoy life without the daily stress of incontinence. Many patients find they can return to activities they once avoided, such as taking long walks, traveling, or even sitting through a movie without worry.
